Dear Maribel C. Noda,

1. From time to time, we visit your website in the hope of reading interesting, well informed articles, comments in your Analysis and Debate Section etcetera. Once again, you have referred to myself and another member of our party by name. . We have no reason to insult the intelligence of President Fidel Castro or of yourself.

2. Without good reason, we do not question the integrity of other people whose actions, sometimes, might have been ill-advised. Like many others, Fidel played a useful role in the Campaign Against Illiteracy which, like the work that is done at CITAD, should be emulated. Canadian and Cuban young people should work together to restore the glorious U.N. City of Havana for the benefit of future generations and to learn from the experience of the young people of Santa Maria del Rosario.

3. We understand that the life of compañero Fidel Castro has been threatened on several occasions and that, recently, he was personally involved in the capture of terrorists who attempted to kidnap passengers, including minors, on a Cuban ferry boat and to transport them to another state within which the death penalty is the ‘prescribed’ sentence for interstate kidnapping of minors.

4. We understand that the President Castro has been in touch with the Prime Minister of Canada who is collaborating with the President of Mozambique to implement an action program to evert still further humanitarian disaster in Africa. We understand that Chileans who were peacekeepers in East Timor and in the former Yuugoslavia are now working with Argentinians to relieve Canadian peacekeepers in Cyprus and that Canada is now preparing to send humanitarian aid and members of the North West Mounted Police, (including veterans who served in Haiti) to the peoples of Iraq.

5. Mao Tse-Tung thought that it remains to be seen if America is a civilized country. We believe, that as a consequence of pro-imperialist ideology that is now distributed mainly from the United States of America, many Cuban young people are confused and apathetic. We believe that, to overcome their confusion, young people in Cuba should work together more effectively and constructively.

6. Above all, young people should work together to overcome the most pressing environmental problems and to acquire the skills that they need to take care of themselves and the aging population by improving the institutions within which they function.

7. At the G8 Conference that was held last year in Kananaskis, near Calgary, Canada, it was decided that the soviet equipped Russian submarines that are leaking radio-active toxins into the Arctic Ocean **MUST ** be secured within ten years. Earlier this month, it was announced that the University of Calgary, through the Arctic Institute of North America and a consortium of several other institutions, is refitting an ice-breaker that could be used as the Command Centre in this humanitarian venture.

8. Last year, at the U.N. Sustainable Global Economic Growth Conference in South Africa, it was decided that what can be done **MUST BE DONE ** within 25 years to preserve as many species as possible of aquatic wild life.

9. We believe that other institutions that are willing to collaborate in these and other endeavours that are directed toward improving the quality of education should contact the University of Calgary.

10. On several occasions, you have referred to me in writing as “comrade and friend”. Although these are names that we honour, they are only words. Actions speak much more loudly. Although we prefer to avoid thinking about the ‘principles’ that guide criminals’ conduct, either before or after the events, yesterday (at their request) we sent Dan Gallins’s article to an international lawyer who prosecuted former Yugoslavian war criminals, to a labour lawyer and to a sometimes threatening ‘security’ officer who is responsible for safety in the work place.

11. We hope that your readers are not burdened by reading this letter. My intellectual interests are confined to translating poetry. We hope that you are in good health and that, as you think about the future, your spirits are high. .

Yours sincerely,

Professor David Whitefield, Calgary, Canada

Dear Maribel C. Noda,

1. For many years, some ‘militant’ social democrats, who have been impacted by an infantile disorder, have had no policy other than “Punch ’em! Punch ’em! Punch ’em!”.

2. Ours is a small Party. Our members are old people. For ‘security’ reasons, we are no longer able to communicate directly by e-mail.

3.. We hope that, while you give thought to the ideas presented by Dan Gallin, you are in good health and that, as you think about the future, you are in good spirits.

Yours sincerely,

Professor David Whitefield, Calgary, Canada.
